{review} Raising The Bar

I received a copy of this book from Zondervan in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and a good review was not guaranteed.

Along with the Bethany Hamilton book I reviewed here, we received a book by Gabrielle Douglas. Raising The Bar is another great book by Zondervan that is fitting nicely into our summer reading plans.

Here is a bit about the book:

In this four-color inspirational title, two-time Olympic gold medal–winning gymnast Gabrielle Douglas shares photos, quotes, and some of her favorite things, as well as tips on how to stay healthy, look your best, and keep strong under pressure.

It can be purchased here for $19.99.

My daughters - similar to most women, young and old - followed the 2012 Summer Olympics obsessively. Especially the gymnastics competition. The US Gymnastics team always seems to steal the heart of America!

It's so refreshing when one of those powerhouse athletes is also wonderful person with a hardworking attitude. Raising The Bar is a fun, easy read for fans of Gabrielle Douglas to learn more about her, her habits and most importantly her faith. Gabby Douglas is the real deal - she is transparent about struggling with fear among other things - but has a solid faith in God. I so appreciate young women like Gabrielle and Bethany Hamilton that are outspoken about their faith. They give young girls like my daughters a wholesome example to look up to.

This book is set up much like a scrap book, with photos and little blurbs about her life. There are quotes from Twitter, copies of letters sent to her from her family, info about what she eats and how she chooses her leotards. My girls like flipping through and rereading the sections about some other celebrities that Gabrielle knows, like Katie Perry and Taylor Swift.  There are pages about Gabby's favorite Bible verses and how those verses have helped her through the challenge of the Olympics.

My daughters really enjoy this book! It's more of a flip through it and skim kinda book, rather than a read cover to cover kinda book. Even my younger girls really enjoy looking through the numerous photos. And a round of congratulations is due to Gabby - she has been nominated for two Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Sports Awards ... Best Female Athlete and Queen of Swag. Congratulations Gabby! Good luck!
