Summer Reading List Ideas

Is anyone else there already? My brain is slowly turning to thoughts that focus on being outside, green grass, and fresh air. Summer!

Both homeschoolers and public schoolers can agree that keeping new and fun reading material in front of children is important. I think it's crucial, especially for newer or struggling readers. Below I've compiled a list of books that will not only help your readers stay sharp this summer, but will also build their faith.

For the little ones in your house, the Adventure Bible series has a new activity book! The Wild About the Bible Sticker and Activity Book contains stories about heroes and adventure from several different Bible characters. My 5 year old loves these. She does all the activities and we talk about all the Bible stories in the activity book.

I love that each page is full of Bible stories and characters, with fun activities. There are coloring pages, connect the dots, word searches, and lots of stickers. These books have become a staple any time we need to pack a 'quiet bag' for church meetings or appointments.

For young readers, the Adventure Bible series has two new books that will keep them reading all summer long. adventure2The Heroes of the Bible Treasury and the Great Stories of the Bible Treasury each contain six Adventure Bible adventure1easy readers. The stories in each of these books are based on the text from the Adventure Bible and are around 30 pages each. They are Level 2 readers so these books are great for children that have started reading chapter books.

The stories are based on Bible text and at the end of each story there is a summary page with more information about the characters, including Bible references and verses.

For the older girls in your life, there are two books I would recommend.

The first was written by a 17 year old girl all about her move from the city to the country. That's Not Hay In My Hair by Juliette Turner is a sweet story for a tween or young teen reader. 11 year old Juliette beautifully takes her readers along with her as she leaves the city behind for the Texas countryside. I appreciated that this book had no boy drama or mystery. It's just a story told from the perspective of a young girl, going through a big life change. Funny and sweet, this book is a great beach read for tweens.

With the Summer Olympics coming up soon, I was happy to see a book about a recent Olympian swimmingfrom Zondervan.

Swimming with Faith is all about gold-medalist Missy Franklin and her rise to the top of her sport. We've reviewed a couple of books about popular athletes and their faith over the last year. With a houseful of girls, it's really important to me that they have strong role models that they can identify with. Missy Franklin is a great woman for young girls to look up to. She demonstrates humility and hard work, even through her success. Swimming With Faith tells of Missy's story and how she's achieved so much at such a young age.
